But hold that thought – the printing press is *exactly* the historical parallel we need to understand the potential (and the pitfalls) of this new AI world we’re rushing headlong into. Just like books suddenly became accessible to more people, Generative AI (GAI) promises to democratize knowledge like never before.

And that begs a BIG question: If everyone has access to the information and creative power that were once the exclusive domain of the elite, can the *existing* social hierarchy – the one built on knowledge gaps and specialized skills – possibly survive?

Can the Old Order Survive?

So, how does all this impact the existing social hierarchy? Well, potentially, in some pretty disruptive ways:

The integration of generative AI into various sectors is set to reshape not only 
business operations but also the societal hierarchy that underpins the workforce. 
As organizations increasingly turn to strategic workforce planning (SWP), they are 
tasked with aligning talent needs with the rapid advancements in technology, particularly AI.

This proactive approach aims to mitigate potential talent gaps arising from 
shifts in demand for skills and occupations as automation becomes more prevalent. 
Research indicates that up to 30% of current worked hours could be replaced by 
automation by 2030, highlighting the urgent need for organizations to adapt their 
workforce strategies to meet these challenges

Furthermore, the potential for generative AI to dramatically increase efficiency and productivity introduces a dual-edged sword. On one hand, it promises significant advancements in operational performance; on the other, it raises critical questions regarding labor rights and the future of work. The ongoing transformation driven by AI necessitates a collaborative effort among policymakers, business leaders, and educators to navigate these changes effectively and responsibly.


 The economic landscape is also shifting, as seen during historical technological booms, such as the dot-com era. A surge in investment similar to that witnessed during the late 2023 phase of AI development could lead to rapid transformations in market dynamics. However, this transition may not be universally beneficial, as industries slow down in growth rates, particularly in private markets, which are projected to experience a deceleration in asset growth over the coming years.


 Amid these shifts, the governance of AI presents significant challenges. With stakeholders across the public and private sectors often lacking a cohesive approach, achieving meaningful and enforceable norms around AI usage remains a complex endeavor. The unpredictability of AI systems exacerbates these challenges, with issues such as bias and the opacity of decision-making processes posing risks to various occupational sectors. In this evolving landscape, the role of digitization is fundamental. It has become clear that technology is no longer merely an enabler of business processes but is now central to organizational strategy across all sectors. The disparities in how industries adapt to these changes may further complicate the existing societal hierarchy, potentially widening gaps between those who can leverage technology effectively and those who cannot. As generative AI continues to advance, its societal impact will require ongoing assessment and strategic management to ensure 
equitable outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
